But one look at the videos of how Harembe was treating the small child should give anyone who cares about children pause. Instead, they point to another gorilla from 1996, Binji Jua, and say that she was not killed in a similar incident. But there is a difference. Where Harembe was dragging the kid around, Binji Jua, a female, was caring for the unconscious child and cradling it. The Influencer Economy and content are on the decline and teenagers are totally worthless if Gawker's Andy Cush is to be believed. The truth is the reverse. An Influencer is one who takes time to convince others to do a something, or not do a something. In the blog Gawker, Andy Cush uses his obvious hatred for teenage influencers as the basis for a sad, personal, insulting, and completely ridiculous rant and at the end proclaims the Influencer economy dead. But what got me stirred up was his proclamation that "you can't rely on content creators all day long." Ok. So here is a contest creator making content to tell us content can't be relied on? Well, if you consider how wrong his content is, he is right. But he had to make the content for me to react to it, and say it's wrong. So all Andy Cush proved is that content matters. To be sure there are brands who have made mistakes in how they manage a relationship with an influencer, but that blithely ignores the large number of very successful campaigns. Consider one that the social media company Tap Influencer did in 2012. Their Twitter based effort to market the Google Nexus phone managed to hit the Worldwide Twitter Trend. Moreover, the game-show approach actually put phones in the hands of those who used Twitter to answer product-based questions. My bet is they could have sold a few phones too, if that is what the client wanted. Dissing Influencers and content just throws the social media baby out with the bath water and misses an important point: it's how the content is created and what it's designed to do that impacts a brand. Thus, a well SEOed series of videos by A Vlogger can alter a search result that can impact a brand. Want proof? Go to Google as of the date of this blog post and search for 'NFL draft hotel' - make sure your private results are turned off. Then click on videos - 9 of the 10 videos are about one hotel: The Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago. All of the nine were made by me. It was a reward to the hotel for great service to me - I covered the NFL Draft in Chicago in 2015 and 2016. See? Now I have promoted that hotel and for some time or until someone tries to alter the results - and they can only do that with, you guessed it, more content. Content is what an Influencer is paid to produce. The discussion should be on how to get better bang for an Influencer buck and not this whining about teenagers on the part of someone who seems to have. It in for teenagers. Teenagers are two things: young and idealistic. That means they don have all the answers but are eager to find them. The Gawker guy disses them whole cloth for this. He blasts then for not knowing what an Influencer does but wanting to be one. Here is a guy who is a content creator, blasting other wanna be content creators for being too young to know that what they produce can influence someone, rather than teaching them how to do what he is, in effect, doing. Mark Davis, the Oakland Raiders Owner, has been on a mission to show that he wants to relocate his football team away from it's spritual home in Oakland and to Las Vegas. On top of the fiscal, legal, and moral issues that come into play, there's another one: the Federal Aviation Administration. Davis and his friends, and those in the Las Vegas and Los Angeles media, have worked to paint a picture that a Las Vegas move is easy and that the Sin City is more desirable for the Silver and Black than its birthplace: Oakland. But in crafting this idea, they have left out a lot of details. One large one is that the currently favored site is so close to the runways at Las Vegas International Airport that it might as well be sitting on one of them. As the photo here shows, the land has a "runway protection zone" where nothing can be built on that part of the land that attracts wildlife - a tailgate area like what Davis wants draws birds. So, seven acres of parking of the kind called for for the stadium will certainly draw wildlife. On top of that, there's the issue of height - the stadium with a retractable roof will be almost 300-feet high. That would place it at the extreme end of the property and push the parking toward the runway. And then there's the issue of how communications and phone jamming devices that may be used for a large scale event will interract with the avionics of an airplane. Yep. It's one thing for a consultant to say the land is OK - it was paid by UNLV. But the FAA has yet to weigh in and from this study photo, the outcome doesn't look good. Stay tuned.

30th And Broadway Oakland Bus Stop - AC Transit, Chris Peeples Are Wrong, Race Baiting Chris Peeples, the President of The AC Transit Board of Directors, has adopted a sad and unnecessary strategy of race-baiting in his efforts to force the placement of a bus stop at 30th and Broadway where he wants it, and not where the business owners and patrons would benefit from it. I know this first-hand because when I called my friend of over 20 years and said that the bus stop was better in front of Sprout's Market, he exploded and yelled "You just don't want black people to stop in front of Summit Bank! You're racist and classist." My response was that I couldn't be racist because I'm black. I was making a joke in Larry David fashion. I told Chris that I have been one of those black people getting off the bus at that stop when it was there before the market was built. But I disgress. Look, everyone involved here and including the business owners, want a bus stop at 30th and Broadway - but having it in front of Summit Bank, where I bank, is just plain stupid. The sidewalk is too narrow, drivers turning right onto Broadway would come right up to the bus's rear, and some drivers would try and race by the right-turn driver to get to the bus stop rather than allow the person to turn - thus creating an accident. On top of all of that, the Mercedes Benz dealership right next to the bank has a giant driveway that produces a new traffic conflict with the bus. The best place for the 30th and Broadway Oakland Bus Stop is in front of Sprout's Market. The new store's sidewalk is already wide enough for bus riders, and the stop was there before the store was planned. Moreover, shoppers who need access to the bus coming out of the store, would not have to walk far to get it - they would if the stop was down the street a good 200 feet away and in front of Summit Bank. This is not about race or gentrification - this is just another one of Chris Peeple's tactics to get what he wants. I've know my friend since 1993 and he can act like a dictator at times. But to call people racist and classist just because he doesn't get what he wants is really not the way to go. Stay tuned.

Well, isn't it interesting that he just happens to have the same $500 million for Las Vegas? What with all of the NFL Draft player spending and all? Folks, Mark Davis does not have $500 million in cash laying around at all. That is the total amount in amortized stadium revenue from club seats and luxury suites he is willing to part with over a period of years - generally about 49 years. That is money that would be used on a lease revenue bond issue. Social Media today is divided into two camps, as I see it: open networkers and digital cocooners. The open networkers are people like myself, who may be Linkedin Open Networkers or something approaching that philosophy. The open networkers, or in Linkedin parlance "LIONS", connect with anyone located anywhere - they aren't concerned with whether they've actually met the person. The open networkers have giant sets of followers and connections not just on Linkedin, but on Twitter and Facebook, and other social media platforms. The advantage of this approach is the obvious ability to spread a message far and as wide as your social media friend, and their friends, allow. This approach emerged during the mid 2000s and is still in use today - except that it has a counter. That opposite are what I call the "Digital Cocooners". The Digital Cocooners only want to connect with a small set of people they claim to know or who are like minded. Their app of choice is less Facebook than it is a messaging app. And when they use Twitter, they tend to have small accounts with follower numbers far lower than the 208 account average - sometimes as small as three or five. They have a narrow interest and seldom, if ever, wander outside of that field. Digital Cocooners are bad for society. With every new platform that encourages private networking and not public sharing, we form a society where we don't listen to each other and develop impatience over the slightest differences in opinion. The only way to stop the continued growth of this society is to create the platform that is both the killer messaging app and the killer social media app all at the same time. Can we do it? We must. Tara Hunt created a LinkedIn vlog and blog that says personal sharing on Facebook is down 21 percent and the reason for this is a kind of social malaise. I disagree. I think the reason is generational change, both in people and technology. There has emerged a generation of people who share via private text message but not as much, if at all, via Facebook or Foursquare. It's to the point where I can easily claim the mayorship at places around the country where it was harder to do that even two years ago. Over that time we have had a splash of messaging devices and venture capitalists looking for the next killer app in that category. That money, in the past, would have went to a social media platform - far less so today. So we have a generation that texts a ton but shares less than we ever did. Instagram posts are used to install photos and because of its design, is not as much the personal sharing device as it is the "personal image" platform. You can post a photo, but I don't necessarily know where you are - that is secondary. What do you think? I am going to follow up with a vlog on how some people don't like social media open networking - the most active form of social media activity there is. Stay tuned.
