Gawker, Which Gave Us Julia Allison, Emily Gould,and Owen Thomas, Closed This Week I have to admit I never thought I would miss Gawker, after the Hulk Hogan Sex Tapes case, but now I do. And because when I think of it, I think more about the people who came to comprise what it was. They ushered in a style of blogging that some call "oversharing" and at the same time a number of vloggers were doing the same on YouTube. Either the blogger told a lot about themselves or was telling a lot about someone else. Take Julia Allison. Gawker bloggers had a field day writing posts that made you wonder "Why am I reading this shit?", but you kept reading anyway. I once accused Allison of trolling tech events in search of white guys she thought were tech and rich. To say the least it got her attention, and Meghan Asha's too - but I think now both of them see my point. For the few blacks in tech, or in this case media tech, it was case of feeling like you were on the outside even as you were in --and feeling like you were not seen, even if you had a blog and were one of six black folks out of 300 at 2006's Vloggercon San Francisco. Uh. Me. Vlogging got me on the CNN / YouTube Democratic Debates. And the NY Times Kit Seele wrote about me but didn't use my name - just referred to two vlogs I made as if I was two separate nameless black guys. Owen Thomas, then the Editor of Valleywag, a Gawker blog, took up my defense and attacked the NY Times. Kit sent an email apology. Owen's cocktail parties are where I met a number of fascinating people. Foremost amount them Sara Lacy, who now runs Pando Daily, but was making a name for herself with TechCrunch and Business Week. Back then Emily Gould was the Gawker editor until she quit and then faced the wrath of founder Nick Denton, who felt inclined to blog about who she slept with. Not cool. Gould wrote blog posts attaching Nick Denton and in the process delighted a page view hungry New York Times. Then she jumped over to The Observer, which blasted my friend (I guess we are still friends) Rachel Sklar. At that point I jumped in and at SF Gate.com called Rachel the hottest woman in the World. Made a vlog too. Through all of that I never net Ms Gould, though we were Facebook friends until my stream of filtered blog content became too noisy for her and she jumped ship. Gawker was the blog who's very personal style made for personal connections of people who were either blogger, subject, or echosphere dweller (me). I think that is to be celebrated and studied. It's a way that forms a good business model - until the people get sick of each other.

SNTIC Oakland Raiders Las Vegas NFL Stadium TIF Presentation Completely Wrong The Southern Nevada Tourism, Infrastructure Committee will be hear a presentation on Tax Increment Financing on Thursday that has a page called "Tax Increment Districts" that shows just how little work staff has done, and how much more work there is to be accomplished before Nevada can intelligently determine how to finance a football stadium. TIF establishes a base year of total assessed property value and sales revenue and other tax revenues within a boundary area. It then takes the next year of total assessed property value of the area and sales revenue and subtracts that from the base year. The difference gives you the Tax Increment Revenue for that year, and then you do this each year and add the annual revenues to get your cumulative revenue, which is multiplied times the property tax and sales tax rates for that area in that state. Rather than tell what TIF is, or show what a possible district boundary would look like, or the possible revenue throw off from it, this SNTIC chart is presented. It shows not possible Las Vegas or Clark County TIF Districts, but brief mentions of other TIF financed projects in America. The Power And Light District used TIF from both sales tax and from property taxes - but only sales tax is mentioned. And LA Live, the complex that has Staples Center at its center, is presented as if it used TIF, when it did not. The entire 4.2 billion complex was privately financed, and the City Center Redevelopment Project Area that normally would have been used for a TIF was tied up in a court challenge. Even Staples Center was financed privately by three banks and using an asset-securitization bond. If the bonds defaulted the banks would own Staples Center. The preparers of the chart saw "Community Redevelopment Agency" and assumed TIF was used for LA Live. It was not. I am told a good number of Oakland City Officials have seen them, and while I can't say specifically who has to this point, I can say its planned to be 55,000 seats in capacity (not new news here) and 6,000 of those are club seats. If you're wondering about cars, there will be parking for 7,800 of them, and since the current facility handles 8,000 automobiles, then the Raiders plans fit right into what can be done now, today, in Oakland, at the Coliseum. And regarding the chance that a Super Bowl would be at this new Oakland Raiders stadium, I am told the assertion is that stadiums are getting smaller and more focused on the delivery of amenities – ticket attendance will be less of a focus in the future. Thus, the NFL would reduce its minimum Super Bowl seat requirement to around 60,000 to 65,000 seats in the case of the Raiders. That possibility was confirmed in a conversation I had with NFL SVP for Business Affairs Eric Grubman just before Super Bowl 50 this year. Landing a Super Bowl is paramount if the Oakland Raiders expect to realize a naming rights agreement that rivals the $224 million Levi Stadium Deal the San Francisco 49ers struck for their new stadium. All that remains is for the much-referred-to-by-Raiders-fans land deal to be done, but Oakland Officials are still waiting for the appraisal of the current Coliseum Complex to be complete – it's not done yet. Once the value of the land is determined, then Ronnie Lott and his Oakland City Pro Football Group LLC can negotate a deal with the Oakland Raiders in whatever fashion the parties see fit, although the constant news I'm told from officials is that Lott's group will purchase 20 percent of the Oakland Raiders for a price about equal to 20 percent of the team's current estimated value of $1.45 billion, or $290 million. Raiders Focused On Oakland, No Mistake About It This latest news tells us the following: first, the Oakland Raiders are clearly focused on building a new, state-of-the-art stadium in Oakland. It's an acknowledgement of the fact that the NFL wants the Raiders to remain in one of its top three media markets (New York and Los Angeles are the other two) and also that it wants to be part of the incredible growth spurt Oakland is going through and shows little sign of abating at this point, either in population or income growth rates. Second, and as per the request of Larry McNeil, the Raiders Vice President of Business Affairs, no one involved in this effort to build a stadium in Oakland, from Lott to Oakland Officials, has shown any effort to talk to the media on the record. The end result for many Raiders fans, regardless of location, is the impression that 'nothing is happening.' Nothing could be further from the truth. Third, Las Vegas is more of a flirtation than anything else. No one in the NFL, and not even Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones, has any real desire to see the Raiders leave Oakland for a far weaker Las Vegas media market. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell speaks for the NFL Owners, and not himself, when he says “The League wants to see a long term stadium solution in Oakland.” Any words you hear to the contrary should not be believed.
